Each place has its own set of rules, if you will, a culture. If you’re in a top fighting gym, then you’ll be tested in fencing and you should just really try to give your best. If it’s supposed to be a “gentle” exposure day, don’t be head/liver hunting. And if you have to add a bit of sauce to your punches, well, get ready to bite down on your mouthpiece and fight to bring back your “A” game.

But even different gyms have different rules, including those specific to lifting weights. Don’t hope to get inside a planetary fitness center and scream to hype yourself to hit that PR while your burly boys are irritating you, like you wouldn’t expect to enter a facility Athlete training for machine strength training and isolated triceps extension machine use.

And if you’re working out in a health club full of machines, you probably shouldn’t leisurely hop on one right next to a stranger working out in an empty gym. It’s like peeing right next to a guy at the bathroom urinal, or sitting next to someone in a movie theater when there’s plenty of room left.

But that’s what happened to one Redditor while she was using the elliptical machine.

In the “AITA” subreddit on the popular social networking site, user Key_Quail_ wanted to know if she was wrong to “shorten [her] exercise” after a guy decided to do ellipticals right next to her in the gym late at night even though there’s a whole row of them available for him to use.

She wrote: “I (27F) prefer to go to the gym later in the evening so I can mostly make room for myself as I don’t like the claustrophobic feeling of having tons of people working out at the same time. I live around. block from a gym chain and go there most nights to use the elliptical for a while.”

“When I got to the gym tonight, the entire row of elliptical machines was empty, so I grabbed one at the end. Everything was fine throughout my workout until the last few minutes. One guy walked into the gym, the gym was almost empty, and got on the elliptical right next to me, which I thought was weird because there was a row of about 12 other machines all empty. It was a bit annoying, so I shortened my workout to a few minutes and jumped down to get disinfectant wipes.”

She continued, “When I went back to clean the machine, he stopped pedaling and asked me what my problem was. I was caught off guard and just stammered something about me finishing my workout. like, that’s basically true anyway, but he said something about me “treating him like a gratuitous predator” and then put his headphones back on .”

The Redditor referred to her post with the question, “Did AITA shorten my workout because some guy picked the ellipse right next to me?”

A lot of Redditors responded that she wasn’t wrong and that the guy was a “geek” who was clearly purposeful or had a very poor understanding of gym etiquette.

“That guy’s a freak. Gym etiquette: don’t bring the machine NEXT TO someone if others are empty. Especially during covid. And not around a single woman. close.

He knows what he’s doing, that’s why he calls himself out. NTA”

Others think that the guy is actually “slapping himself in the face” with the comment “predator”: “NTA. It’s strange to choose the person right next to you, even more strange when later bragging that you can was looking at him “like a predator.”

It’s like he’s talking about himself.”

And then there are those who find it strange that the man notices her workout again: “You’re a two-faced AH. First, he picked an ellipse that’s RIGHT SIDE WITH YOU WHEN YOU ARE. GET A CHOICE OF OTHER OTHER MACHINE Then he made a big deal out of it when you left, when your workout schedule was ABSOLUTELY NOT HIS WORK.

And, let me tell you, at the age of 13, all men know how to choose which urinal to use when you go to the bathroom and even one is already used. This is basically the same exercise, and he failed miserably.”

What do you think? Basically, is he wrong to “push” her by going to the ellipse right next to the woman?
