[Update] Greta Thunberg Anorexia: Does Swedish Activist Have Eating Disorder?

Greta Thunberg Anorexia: Get insights on the Swedish environmental activist’s illness and health issues. Does she have an eating disorder?

Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg is well recognized for pressuring world leaders to act immediately to slow down climate change.

When Thunberg convinced her parents to change their lifestyles to lessen their personal carbon footprint, she began her campaign.

When she was 15 years old, she started spending her Fridays outside the Swedish Parliament with a sign that read, “School Strike for Climate” (School Strike for Climate).

Due to her young and direct, harsh communication style in front of the general public as well as political leaders and assemblies, Thunberg initially caught the attention of the general public.

She berates world leaders for their inaction on the climate catastrophe, saying they haven’t done enough to confront it.

Due mainly to her youth and the sudden rise of her popularity, Thunberg became both a leader and a target of criticism in the activist movement.

The “Greta effect” has been used to describe her impact on the global scene by The Guardian and other publications.

Greta Thunberg Anorexia: Does Swedish Activist Have Eating Disorder?

The Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg suffered from an eating disorder called Anorexia at an early age.

In 2020, Greta Thunberg’s mother discussed how her daughter battled compulsive eating and missed a lot of school in her early adolescence.

However, the activist overcame the eating disorder through the diagnosis of autism.

Greta, now 20 years old, was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome following a period of food restriction that nearly led to her being hospitalized, according to Malena Ernman.

Ernman explains the initial symptoms of her older daughter’s illness in passages from the entire Thunberg family’s book, Our House is on Fire: Scenes of a Family and a Planet in Crisis, which was published in the Observer.

According to Ernman, “she was gradually vanishing into some kind of darkness.” She ceased her piano practice. She ceased to laugh. She ceased speaking. She also gave up eating.

Svante Thunberg, an actor, and Ernman, a well-known Swedish opera singer, found it difficult to live with their daughter’s silence and inability to eat anything beyond little portions of rice, avocado, and gnocchi.

Before recovering, she lost 10 kg in two months and was on the edge of being admitted to the hospital.

Thunberg’s father learned she was being bullied when she returned to school. According to Ernman, “The school isn’t sympathetic.” But the school believes Greta is to blame.”

Psychiatrists evaluated Thunberg after gaining some weight, and they identified “high-functioning” autism, which Ernman refers to as Asperger’s, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

According to Autism NI, Asperger syndrome is a disorder which is a part of the autism spectrum.

In an excerpt from the book Our House is on Fire: Scenes of a Family and a Planet in Crisis by the entire Thunberg family and reviewed by The Observer, Ernman stated that the problems began in 2014 when the environmental activist was just 11 years old.

She cried when she should have been resting at night. On the way to school, she sobbed. Her instructors called home practically daily as she sobbed in class and throughout recess.

She was recently seen blocking oil tankers on the road during a climate demonstration in the Swedish city of Malmo.

She did so just hours after appearing in court for a similar protest last month. As a result, the activist was forcefully removed by the police for her act.
